"Hi, everbody. Michael G. here. As some of you already know, I perform with a band called The Dahls. We finally have some songs on itunes! In addition to being a co-writer, I also sing and play guitar on the songs. I'm gettin' my folk on here. I hope you dig it. mg"

Something intoxicating about the melody, and nicely rooted in (mostly) American literature.
"Of all of the words of mice and men, the saddest are 'It might have been.'" from Vonnegut's book "Cat's Cradle" (1963) who got part of the phrase from the poem Maud Muller (1856) by John Greenleaf Whittier.
"For of all sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: "It might have been!" "
And the other from Steinbeck, whose title "Of Mice and Men" comes from the poem "To A Mouse" (1786) by Robert Burns, whose works were a strong influence on Whittier.
Nicely used by Gurley in this simple but brilliant little folk song.
(Edited to correct the title of the song--Geez Louise, I gotta stop posting in the dead o' night!)
